Contest Rules


Rules – 2013

1. The Write Like a Pirate (WLP) contest is open to residents of the 50 United States and District of Columbia, ages 6-11. One entry per child.

2. Submission maximum: 500 words. Accompanying illustrations are encouraged. Stories may be typed or handwritten, but must be the child’s original, unpublished work.

3. An entry form with parental permission must be printed, completed, scanned, and submitted with the work.

4. Submissions must be emailed to thenextdoorseries@gmail.com by Monday, September 30, 2013.  Submissions email dated after September 30 will not be considered for a prize.

5. Entries will be judged by a panel of teachers and librarians in three categories:

              Ages 6-7

              Ages 8-9

              Ages 10-11

     Judges will be looking for originality, creativity, content suitable for young readers, and “pirate writing” appropriate for the age of the writer.

6.  One winning entry from each category will be published in the contest section of denettefretz.com, on Tuesday, October 15. Winners will be notified by email on or before October 15. One winner in each category will receive:

            1.  “Treasure” in the form of $50.00 Visa gift card

            2.  An autographed copy of Pirates on the Farm

            3.  An eye patch

7.  Of the three age-category winners, one name will be randomly drawn to receive the opportunity for the author to Skype with the winner’s Sunday school class or school classroom.

8. Entrants grant ZonderKidz and denettefretz.com the right to use the submitted entry,  accompanying illustrations, and child’s name, age, and state for any and all advertising and promotion. Rights, title, interest, and copyright of submitted works are conferred to ZonderKidz and denettefretz.com.

9. Submission of an entry constitutes agreement with the above rules.
