Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
my hope comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
Psalm 62:5-6
The word “find” feels counterintuitive when paired with rest. Rest seems like it should come naturally and easily. But to “find” rest for the soul, one must seek it. Consider Jeremiah 6:16:
This is what the Lord says:
“Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls.
But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
We live in a seeking culture. A culture full of unrest. A culture that ignores rest-filled “ancient paths,” forges “new” ones, and then rationalizes the fallout. However, rest for the soul can only be found by discovering the one who created it:
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:29
