Mommy’s Favorite Smell: A Kidmin Object Lesson

Warm cinnamon rolls? Tulips? Dirty diapers? As Mommy and Little Lion traverse their scent-filled day, curious Little Lion attempts to discover Mommy’s Favorite Smell. Like its predecessor, Daddy’s Favorite Sound, Mommy’s Favorite Smell is not a celebration of scents, but of the great love and bond between parent and child. Written by Brock Eastman and Elsie Mae Eastman, the book is delightfully illustrated by David Miles and encourages listener participation through repeated phrases such as, “Mommy, Mommy, is this your favorite smell?”

For the children’s ministry lesson plan, below, I focused on I will thank God for creating my sense of smell and Psalm 139:14: I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. However, this lesson with its giftable craft could be adapted for Mother’s Day with an “honor your mother theme,” similar to the Father’s Day kidmin lesson I created for Daddy’s Favorite Sound. Conversely, the Daddy’s Favorite Sound Lesson could be adapted to become part of a series about God’s miraculous creation and our senses.

The lesson plan graphic, below, is in jpeg format, but you may access the pdf here.

Scent Bags: Cotton Balls with Essential Oils or Extracts

The idea and directions for the no-sew sachet came from this website, BUT the directions should say 5-7 drops of essential oil, instead of 57. Yikes! I used 7. Also, use cotton balls or cotton batting. At first, I tried leftover polyester fiberfill, which did not absorb the oil.
